Fall Break - LCS Visit and Family Time
Today was an amazing day spent hiking at a local state park here in Indiana called Turkey Run. It was a place we went to often for school field trips as it was a short drive from my hometown. Today I was able to go for a great hike with my youngest son as we are on Fall Break here in Indiana.
This week is also the first full week of vacation for 2024 that I was able to take after starting my new job. It’s been pretty busy since starting in May and it was nice to shutoff the phone all day and enjoy a nice 3 mile hike in the woods. It was simply an awesome one-on-one time with my 10 year old hiking over 2 very rugged trails helping each other over tree limbs and through deep ravines.
After several hours of hiking we had lunch at a small town cafe in Hillsboro, Indiana (pop. 502) and then visited the General Lew Wallace museum in Crawfordsville. Lew Wallace was an amazing Renaissance man — Civil War General, Author of Ben Hur, governor of the New Mexico territory, and a lot more. The dude was pretty amazing in the things he accomplished and did in his life. We enjoyed a nice visit at the museum that used to serve as his “man-cave”.
I know I’ll look back in 10 years and think how fortunate it was to spend the day together!
Yesterday was also able to get a little time to head over to our LCS here in Indianapolis and picked up some 2024 Topps needs, along with some great vintage cards. Was not meaning to add 1951 Bowmans to the collection but was glad to pick up these 4 for a good price.
Was also able to find a 1957 need, reducing the needed card for the Cubs team set to just the Team Card and Ernie Banks. I would love to find a beat up, creased old Banks to add to the collection, but know that will be tough. The 1964 Santo that I found in the commons has an enormous crease through the middle, but from these pics you can’t even tell. Now that I was I need to find for Williams, Banks and Santos in the 50s, 60s and 70s to help knock out team sets!
AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteI haven't gone hiking in the woods in quite some time. Not sure what I'm more jealous about... that hike or your son's Fall Break. Both sound awesome!
ReplyDeleteIt was nice to shut the email off for the day! We are right on the verge of fall so lots of green, yellow orange and red in the trees right now!
DeleteFall Break sounds wonderful. Never heard of such a thing. We just get one day in October.
ReplyDeleteGrowing up just over the border in Illinois, we never had fall break either. But its kind of a nice week off. We usually head to Florids for one last summer week before winter, but high school football didnt get a break this year.
DeleteThe museum sounds like it would've been neat. We could only all be so lucky to have such a man cave! I go hiking quite a bit from fall to spring, so I can certainly appreciate your appreciation for getting to get out and do so. You must be doing something right as a parent too, as you hear so often now about kids that won't do anything but sit and stare at a screen.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jon, we really did enjoy the day and the man cave was awesome. 25 by 25 foot with plenty of room for cards. Imagine the time before radio and TV!
DeleteI am pretty lucky to have two great kids who know when its time to put the phones down. We axtually waited until 12 before the oldest could get a phone!
