133 Years Old - "Bass Ball" Records!

We were lucky to have some great weather here in Indiana yesterday -- so was able to spend a relaxing afternoon walking around our small downtown. After our annual visit to Santa on Main Street, a tradition we've been doing now for over a decade, we visited the antique store in town. For $7 we picked up this cool book that is 133 years old!

Sure we could have just looked this book up on-line and read the facts but there is something about physically holding and looking through a book that is that old that's just amazing. How many places it's likely to have been and how many different people have read through the pages.

Of course, there is a sporting section with some cool facts that I'll update on later. The first sports page is dedicated to "Bass-Ball" so thought I'd scan that in. Some neat facts:

  • Poor Pittsburgh, doormats of the N'L over a century ago as well.
  • Chicago is the western-most team in the National League, while St. Louis looks to have that distinction in the American Assoc.
  • Looks like Baseball Reference has a slightly different standings, but really awesome to see the team names there -- Cleveland should have selected Spiders instead of Guardians during the name change debacle.
  • The Louisville Colonels and Brooklyn Bridegrooms tied in the "World Series", 3-3-1! Imagine no winner, so we'll just end the series in a Tie!
  • I was intrigued with the "Player's League" and found a good article on what exactly that was (April 19, 1890: Debut of the Players League – Society for American Baseball Research (sabr.org))
  • According to records, Cannonball Titcomb threw a no-hitter on 09/15/1890 in a 7-0 win by Rochester over Syracuse. What a name!

  1. Nice pickup! I also agree Cleveland should have went with Spiders.

  2. That's a really great find for seven bucks. And just because you can look up such things on the internet now, that doesn't mean that you'll always be able to. Despite what some folks think, things on the internet are not permanent. And as far as the new Cleveland name goes, yeah, they could've chose just about anything better than the one they did.
