2024 Topps Flagship

For the first time in years, I decided to visit our local card shop and buy a box of Topps flagship on release day.  I have been a fan of the design when pictures started showing up earlier this year, and was excited to get into work early -- in order to leave work early -- and splurge on a hobby box.

I took my time before dinner and opened the first 8 packs. I must admit I have an awesome wife and instead of going out to dinner tonight, we're heading to our favorite sushi place on Saturday evening!

Here are some of the highlights, observations and cool inserts from the first 8 packs!

These were the highlights of the first pack. Loving the back design of these two for a few reasons. The coloring matches up with team colors and the font is very easy to read. This also goes for the bottom right codes to look up variations (I have not searched for those yet), but my old eyes appreciate the letter is a million times easier to read.

Cool insert of Ken Griffey, Jr. - not sure how rare these are quite yet as Cardboard Connection does not have much about the set out yet.

Looks like ebay already has a few of these on sale. Top middle card is a shiny foil of what I think may be the AL Champs this coming season. All-Star Rookie Cup cards seem to be plentiful this season.

I like the look of the All Topps team and it harkens back to some of those old Flair designs. Only thing I don't like is the dual color big picture seems off centered and looks a little strange.

'89 Topps 35th anniversary looks good, but all that space after the name is going to drive me a bit crazy! I think these look good, but the font just looks off. The Future Stars return as well, and interesting the team name is replaced. The Blue Print insert is pretty awesome and I'll be excited to see how many are included in this insert - this may be one where I try to collect the sub-set.

Overall I really like the set so far and looking forward to opening the remaining packs here -- will update the rest of the highlights and inserts. Few other things I noticed:

1. The Neon actually has a metallic sheen to it. I tried to capture it on the Mookie card, but if you turn the card in the light, the red actually looks like copper. Pirates look pretty cool too as the yellow in the border takes on a gold shine.

2. The card stock is much better than anything in the past several years. I was really impressed with the '23 Stadium Club stock, and '24 flagship does not disappoint either. It just feels more solid and less cheap.

3. There are a ton of City Connect jerseys. It's really noticeable. In fact every single Twin and Padre I have is in those alternate jerseys. Nearly the same with the Rangers and I have to do a double take as to what the heck that team is.

Overall I'm looking forward to completing this set this and will be looking for any duplicate trades here soon!

  1. The cards look great. The design Topps came up with this year is really good. Especially liking the Bobby Witt Jr.

    1. I agree - the blueprint is pretty neat - looks like they're short prints and seeing them on ebay for $3.00 each, so not likely to drop over $50 on the entire subset.

  2. I love the look so much I know I'm going to be annoyed by the inserts, this is one set I'd be happpy with zero inserts. ... I've said a few places already that they've got to stop with the city connect uniform push. Probably some MLB directive to Topps, but it's not going to make me like them any more.

    1. Good point - apparently there is also a City Connect relic subset as well, so they're really making a big push -- it all comes down to the $$$ on the city connect stuff. It was interesting but in this hobby box, not a single Stars of MLB card -- those are probably going to be in the retail product.

  3. This is the fourth or fifth blog post with 2024 Topps in it... and the design is really growing on me. I might grab a blaster or two of each series, but ultimately I'll just buy a factory set and call it a day.

I'm glad the card codes are easier to read... although I've got to admit, it's still a little too small for my eyes to see.

As for the City Connect jersey appearances... it's sad to hear that most of the Padres are featured in them, because I love the brown & gold jerseys. At least Topps hasn't gone crazy and turned them into rare variation cards. I could see them eventually doing something like that.
