3 (Maybe 2) Team Sets & A Ryno Collection Boost

Exactly 5 years ago tonight, as my oldest was just entering the crazy world of travel baseball, we were spending the evening together at a clinic for local youth put on by my childhood hero, Ryne Sandberg.

I’ll never forget that winter evening and have a great photo of him with Ryno after the clinic wrapped up. We wrapped it up with a cheeseburger and ice cream at Culver’s right down the street from the indoor facility.

That was right before the “dark times” of Covid hit us and one week before I traveled to Madrid for the last international portion of my MBA program. Hard to believe how much has changed in those 5 years. Also hard to believe how quickly time has flown by in those 5 years!

Kind of fitting that today, a handful of recent WhatNot wins arrived in the mailbox, which included several new cards to add to my Ryno collection, along with some very nice repeaters.

In addition, in the same WhatNot show I was able to pickup 3 team sets all for $5 each. I really love the 1985 Fleer set because I never had any of those as a kid, but I sure remember that 1984 Cubs Team as a kid!

I put down “Maybe 2” in subject line of this post because I was really excited to get the 1988 O-Pee-Chee set, however the big question is do I really have the Team Set or not? Lee Smith (“Now with Red Sox”) is there, but no Vance Law or Calvin Schiraldi. Law’s card is an Expos card, while Schiraldi is a Red Sox card. Oh well — I’ll count this as a team set, but will also work to get the Law and Schiraldi.

    1. Jon - it really was! I showed him the picture today and it jogged our memory -- now that he's nearly 15 though it's tough to get him excited about much!
