The Weather Is Here

The weather here seems to have finally turned a corner (like it usually does - it just seems like a long time!), and we've had some beautiful 70 degree days.

Friday night my older son's travel ball coach reserved some time at our outdoor field and invited the team out for an unofficial practice for those that wanted to get outside. Only two players, his son and mine took him up on the offer. At the end of the day is worked out great for an hour and half workout getting in some pitching, fielding and hitting just to keep the arms fresh heading into this season.

My youngest just celebrated his birthday this week and we celebrated that with a Friday night band competition (his band got a Gold!) along with his choice of dinner (Panda Express!). His Little League season starts in about three weeks and this year he actually got on the Cubs! I'll be helping coach that team as well so let the busy days and weekends begin!

After practice yesterday we hit up our Local Card shop on the way home -- which my oldest is now driving us too -- to look for a few 2026 Topps. After reading Night Owl's post a few weeks ago about horrible collation and watching Hobby Box breaks on What Not, I was convinced to spend the bare minimum to try and build the set.

The dime box / set builder boxes for 2026 Topps were not out yet, but I was able to find about 200 cards in the dime box, so wound up filling up the 330 count box for $10 with 2026 Topps. I still have quite a few dupes and hoping to trade those away in TCDb here soon.

In addition, my oldest and I looked through a few boxes of 1998 to 2009 cards and picked out Cubs and Topps Rookie Cups. We found a decent stack and it was more fun sitting there with him looking through cards again like he did when he was younger.

I think we may be really close to finishing the 2001 Cubs Team set, but man were those cards in bad shape. Whatever glossy cover Topps put on those cards really made them stick together. I'm not a picky collector though unless the cards look like they went through a washing machine, so we took what we could find...

Overall it was a great Saturday and looking forward to spring break coming up here soon and baseball season starting up next week!

  1. Panda Express! Can't beat it.

Got to let those mid-1990s to mid-2000s cards BREATH or they stick together. I think too many people got complete sets then and then didn't bother to open them.

It will be a while until we hit the 70s. Best I think we're doing this week is today and it's 40 and raining.

    1. Ha good old Panda Express! It truly is his favorite restaurant!

Hopefully the warm weather pushes over your direction - it's amazing having the windows open and the furnace off for a few days!

  3. I'm a big fan of Panda Express. Eggplant tofu, mushroom chicken, and fried rice is usually my goto order. Hmmm... maybe one of these days I'll grab some on my way home from work.
