With a few more purchases over the weekend I am approaching 30,000 cards in my collection. Of those my Ryno collection is at 281. Just shy of 1% of the total!
This morning was one of those cold 32 degree days around here, so over my cup of coffee I decided to reorganize my binder. While doing that decided to put this top 10 list together.
Decided to exclude the rookies because really like all 3 (and soon to be 4 with an ebay win of his O Pee Chee rookie tonight).
So here is my top 10 (non rookie) favorites:
#10 - 1991 Fleer Home Run Kings
Even though the border of these is absolutely awful. I like the striking difference between Ryno and Cecil. I still remember the excitement of Cecil hitting 50 homers that season and also Sandberg hitting 40 dingers, something unheard of for a second baseman.
#9 - 1992 Upper Deck Denny's Grand Slam Holograms
Rmember all the rage of hologram cards in the early 90s? The Hank Aaron was going to be worth millions! It didn't quite work that way, but I do think the 3D effect of these is cool.
#8 - 1986 Fleer & Fleer Miniature
One thing I have liked about Fleer is how teams are numbered in order. Brings out the accountant in me. Like the design and how blue border and red name area go well with the Cubs colors.
#7 - 1994 Stadium Club
I don't have many of these as I was 17 when these came out. Sports, cars and girls took the place a baseball cards. I do like this photo and remember well the excitement around the Rockies and Marlins coming on board in MLB.
#6 - 1991 Cubs Team Schedule
Many of us remember the days before cell phones and the internet. This is how we knew when our favorite team was going to play. My 14 year old self grabbed a huge stack of these because it had Ryno on the cover.
#5 - 2004 Fleer Greats of the Game
This is a new addition to the collection. I like the design of this quite a bit. The picture frame is raised a bit as well and the card has a nice glossy photo.
#4 - 1990 Topps
This would have been right in the prime of my collecting as a kid. Still hard to believe that was 35 years ago. This set had some really odd color choices for borders but this combo really works on this card.
#3 - 1988 Fleer
For some reason as a kid never had many of these. I think it was because they were less available than Topps and Donruss in my town? Again really like the red white and blue borders which really work well with the Cubs. Also love the Wrigley ivy in the background.
#2 - 1992 Leaf
Great action photo and kind of cool omly seeing the baserunner's legs just coming into the picture. Think back to how many double plays were turned on the infield as I watched the games on WGN with my grandpa. Also like the silver borders on Leaf in the early 90s.
#1 - 1991 Fleer ProVisions
As awful as the base set borders were Fleer did a great job on these ProVisions subset. I really liked these inserts when they came out. The pack inserts featured black borders but the factory set insert only had 4 players and had a white border.
What is so interesting about this card is that the ProVision cards all have superhero features of the players except for Ryno. It kind of just fits his personality as a good all around player who did everything in the game well.
Thanks for reading this long post as this is by far one of longest I have made!
