Passing of a Childhood Legend

Some sad news today to hear that one of the legendary players from my childhood passed away today. Rickey Henderson was a legend and was part of those early 1990 Oakland A’s teams that I used to love watching as a kid. It’s shocking and a bit humbling to see so many legendary players that I watched as a kid passing away. This was my favorite card of his as a kid and I STILL have this in a one touch protector.

It’s been a busy last six months since taking on the new job in June. Very little free time to do much outside of family activities and work, but still try to add some cards via WhatNot auctions which makes it a lot easier to find a few one-off needs and deals.

This weekend was also the first chance I’ve had this fall to visit the local antique store on a Saturday after dropping my oldest off for his winter baseball workouts. The last 6 or 7 Saturdays have consistent dropping off, then heading over to the library to tackle a few hours of work — it was REALLY nice not to do that today!

Onto the adds…there was a WhatNot auction that was breaking up an entire 1971 Topps Set a few weekends ago, so was able to tackle quite a few Cubs needs. This Ernie Banks only set me back $6! It’s center pretty awful, and is pretty mis-cut but what a price!

Was also able to pick up some other needs including some high numbers. What was great was picking up a group of 10 high numbers for $4! I really only wanted the Phil Reagan but these all came along. Figured I’d use the other 9 for Trade Bait and already was able to complete one through TCDB for the Fergie Jenkins League Leader Card. I will likely keep the Twins because really like the back shows Twins/Senators records

Also picked up this trio of cards from a different WhatNot auction last weekend. Was amazing to find a Ryne Sandberg from the junk wax era that I did not have and to pick it up for $1 was a great deal.

Finally this add was my Saturday antique store find. I tend to shy away from doing much from here unless I can find some cheap junk wax to open. Most booths usually have cards way over priced…as an example there was a Tony Gwynn PSA 9 rookie card that was 50% off — however the asking price was $175!!!

I did find a booth that was 40% off and they surprising had this 1967 Santo for $6, so $3.60 is not a bad price for a Cubs Team need.
Also picked up a few of these odd ball cards and player collections for $1..

It’s sad to think that these legendary players from my childhood are passing away. I guess it’s an inevitable part of growing older.

Was just thinking about growing older tonight as I watch my 14 year old doing things I thought were so far into the future. Silly little things like putting the angel on top of the tree without any help and no longer getting excited about when Santa comes around on the fire truck as part of the annual fire department road training. These things really make you start appreciating spending time with family and as much time as possible with my two sons continuing to make memories!
